Characteristics and Seasonal Variability of the Arctic Circumpolar Boundary Current in the Eurasian Basin

  • 摘要: 北极环极边界流携带大西洋水进入北冰洋,影响其水量平衡和热量收支,与海冰冻融变化和淡水输出联系紧密,是北极研究的重点内容之一。本文基于欧亚海盆弗拉姆海峡至拉普捷夫海间4条断面的长期锚系观测数据,结合经验正交函数分解法等方法,探究北极环极边界流的演进及其时空变化。结果表明,环极流弗拉姆海峡分支在气旋式路径上呈现流速逐渐减弱与流速核心下沉特征,巴伦支海分支的注入使北地群岛断面呈现陆架边缘急流,最大流速达35 cm/s。环极流沿程在弗拉姆海峡的体积运输量为(3.45±0.26) Sv,至拉普捷夫海降至(2.79±0.23) Sv,总体呈递减趋势,各断面热量通量也呈递减趋势。流速呈现明显的季节差异,冬季强于夏季,并与入流强度等紧密相关。本文揭示的环极流在欧亚海盆内的特征和变率,有助于评估环极流结构及更深入地探究北冰洋的总体特征和变化机理。

     

    Abstract: The Arctic Circumpolar Boundary Current (ACBC) transports Atlantic Water (AW) into the Arctic Ocean, shaping the regional water and heat budgets and tightly coupling with sea-ice melt-freeze cycles and freshwater export. Using long-term mooring observations from four sections spanning the Eurasian Basin-from Fram Strait to the Laptev Sea and applying empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, we examine the evolution and spatiotemporal variability of the ACBC. Results show that along its cyclonic pathway the Fram Strait branch exhibits a gradual weakening and a deepening of the velocity core. Injection from the Barents Sea branch generates a shelf-edge jet at the Svalbard section, with peak speeds up to 35 cm/s. Volume transport decreases along the path, from (3.45±0.26) Sv at Fram Strait to (2.79±0.23) Sv at the Laptev Sea, and the heat flux likewise diminishes across successive sections. The current displays pronounced seasonality—stronger in winter than in summer-closely linked to the strength of AW inflow. These findings clarify the characteristics and variability of the ACBC within the Eurasian Basin, provide an assessment of its structure, and contribute to a deeper understanding of the Arctic Ocean’s overall state and governing mechanisms.
