Abstract:
The Order Prorocentrales represents a significant group of phytoplankton in marine ecosystems, with extensive research focused on its growth characteristics, taxonomic identification, and metabolic products. However, substantial issues persisted in the usage of Chinese nomenclature for Prorocentrales species in domestic literature, including the absence of standardized Chinese names, inconsistent naming practices, and a lack of scientific rationale for certain designations. These discrepancies highlighted the urgent need to standardize the Chinese nomenclature for species within this order. This study investigated the valid Latin species names of Prorocentrales listed in the AlgaeBase database. By systematically reviewing Chinese literature and taxonomic references, and adhering to established Chinese nomenclature guidelines, we proposed standardized Chinese names for all documented species within the order. The methodology prioritized the original intent of taxonomists, integrates etymological interpretations of Latin names, and incorporates morphological traits of the species. The results indicated that 93 species of Prorocentrales are currently recognized worldwide, belonging to 2 families and 7 genera. The Chinese name of 14 species had been previously determined, widely used, and reserved. Combining the literature, morphological and physiological characteristics, we proposed a proper Chinese name for four species with two or more Chinese names. The correct Chinese names were proposed for 75 species with no Chinese names based on the original meaning and morphological characteristics described in the literature when they were established. This work provided a comprehensive reference for standardizing Chinese nomenclature in future research on Prorocentrales, ensuring clarity and academic rigor in interdisciplinary communication.
